ALFRED PENN, JR., died at the Officers' Training Camp in Chicago last Thursday. He was instructor in the Naval Construction School and he was detained from active service abroad for more useful patriotic work at home. His brilliant mind was prepared by his studies in architecture to grasp the intricacies of naval construction work and his clearness of thought and expression singled him out to his superior officers as a brilliant and valuable teacher. This alone kept him from active service in the navy and permitted him to offer the supremem sacrifice of his life in the land of his birth and not "somewhere on the high seas."
In the death of this young officer two distinguished families are plunged in grief. He was the grandson of one of the most famous governor of Louisiana, David Bradfute Penn, and Marie Allain, and through his mother Sydney Tupper, who survives him, he was descended from Tristram Tupper and Sydney Conrad Palfrey. He also is survived by his father, Alfred Penn, Sr., and a brother, Tristram Tupper Penn.
Three years ago he married Edith Eleanor Ryan. These married years brought ideal happiness to both, with corresponding grief and sorrow now, which crush the young wife. To the sorrowing families and to the bride of yesterday are tendered condolence and affectionate sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
