LANCASTER: Opal Miriam Elder, 87, of Lancaster, Ohio, passed peacefully December 10, 2013. Miriam was born at home at Carroll, Ohio, at 5:00 a.m. on November 6, 1926, the fourth child of the late Troy Ora and Clara Louise Walter Bader. On December 12, 1926, she was baptized at Emanuel Lutheran Chuch in Lancaster, Ohio, where she was an active member.

Miriam graduated from Carroll High School on May 21, 1944. She attended Ohio University for two years and student taught in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. She took a job as a fourth grade teacher in Carroll, Ohio where her class had 44 students. She then returned to Ohio University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with honors. She married the late Howard Warren Elder, June 3rd, 1951. She taught for over 30 years in Carroll, Thurston, Pleasantville, Bremen and Rushville elementary schools, and kept an album with pictures of each class she taught. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. She received her Master's Degree in curriculum and supervision from Ohio University in 1969. She worked in the Fairfield County Administration office from 1970-1975. In 1983, she became the principal at Pleasantville Elementary, from where she retired in 1986.

She was president of the Alpha Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a society for outstanding women in education. She was also president of the Fairfield County Education Association, president of the Fairfield County chapter of the Retired Teachers Association and director of District Six of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She served as Sunday School Superintendent, President of Altar Guild, and member of Women of Faith and Rose of Concern at Emanuel Lutheran Church. She loved music and sang in the choir. She was president of Lutheran Social Service auxiliary and volunteered for over 20 years at Lancaster-Fairfield Medical Center. She belonged to the Rushville and Olivedale Senior Citizens groups and Farm Bureau Council #16. She loved to travel and visited Hawaii, Alaska, the Maritime Provices, Europe, the Panaman Canal, and especially enjoyed the Oberammergau Passion play. She was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan.

Miriam is survived by her siblings: Frances (Robert) Mouch of Dublin, Ohio; Rita (John) Ricketts of Pickerington, Ohio; Walter (Joann) Bader of Baltimore, Ohio; and Dr. Kenneth (Linda) Bader of Chesterfield, Missouri; sister-in-law Martha Blackstone of Thornville, Ohio; brother-in-law Bill Tuma of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; sons Kevin (Kathy) Elder and Karl (Peggy) Elder of Pleasantville, Ohio; daughter Beverly Sturm of Beavercreek, Ohio; grandchildren Zachary Elder of Washington, DC; Jacob (Melanie) Elder of Salisbury, Maryland; Eliza Elder, Raybecca Elder, Aubrey Elder, John Elder, all of Pleasantville, Ohio; great-granddaughters, Jade Marie Elder and Allyson Marynn Elder; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Miriam was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Warren Elder, her parents Troy Ora and Clara Louise Bader, father and mother-in-law William Hamilton and Edith Rowles Elder, brother and sister-in-law, Carl Irvin and Marjorie Bader, sister and brother-in-law Dortha Fern Bader and Theodore (Ted) Gilbert, and sister-in-law Marilyn Elder Tuma.

Funeral service will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, with Rev. Mark Raddatz officiating. Friends may call at Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 on Thursday and one hour prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will be held immediately after the service at West Rushville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 231 E. Mulberry Street, Lancaster, Ohio 43130.
