An original member of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, he was the son of Alfred and Adelia Evans, born into slavery in Fayette County, TN. He entered Fisk University, Nashville, in 1868. He was deputy wharf-master in Memphis from 1874-1876, a member of Memphis City Council from 1877-1880, and was elected to the Tennessee Legislature in 1884. He and his wife moved to Chicago sometime after June, 1891, where he was a coal dealer.
