McHENRY – Gladys B. Schmitt, 83, of McHenry, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at her home surrounded by her entire family.
She was born Dec. 20, 1929, in Geneva, to Maurice and Anna (Grommes) Burnell. On Nov. 12, 1949, she married Merwyn Schmitt in Elgin.
A resident of McHenry since 1949, Gladys received her nursing degree at the College of Lake County. She was employed as an RN for 45 years, working at Lake Forest Hospital, Winchester House, McHenry Hospital and Valley Hi Nursing Home before retiring in 2007. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in McHenry and the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Merwyn; six children, Michael (Diane) Schmitt of Mundelein, Catherine Jensen of Springfield, Robert (Patricia) Schmitt of McHenry, Diane (Jim) Hahn of McHenry, Linda (Dale) Moll of McHenry and Janine (Chris Hopp) French of McHenry; 14 grandchildren, Chad (Julie) Schmitt, Jessica (Jeremy) Gardien, Steven (Nicole) Jensen, Michael (Natalie Nelson) Jensen, Bob (Allison) Schmitt, Brian (Emily) Schmitt, Eric (Sarah Cross) Schmitt, Cory (Mike) Harrison, Lindsay (Mike) Schoenherr, Tyler Hahn, Jamie (Chris) Rosinski, Jeremy (Marcy) Moll, Jennifer (Brian) Santi and Justin (Jessica) French; 14 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Maurine Weberpal, Elizabeth Davis, Judith Hahn and Delores Tucker; and a brother, Charles Burnell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Arlene Follis and Linda Reinert; and a granddaughter, Kallie Hahn.
A visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
The funeral Mass is pending for Friday morning.
Interment will be in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock.
