James was born on January 12, 1900 in Dumfries, Scotland. He was the second of four children born to parents John and Jean (Steele) Kirk.

His siblings were:

• Agnes Sloan Kirk (1897-1940). She died unmarried and without children.

• John Steele Kirk (1902-1977). He came to Canada in 1927 and eventually settled in Lethbridge, Alberta. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

• Alexander Kirk (1907-1965). He married Isabella Noble Withnall and had two sons.

In October 1919, James sailed aboard the White Star Line's SS Lapland from England to New York. According to the ship manifest he was heading to Urich, Henry County, Missouri.

In the 1920 census, he is living in Henry County with his cousin Alexander Sloan and working as a farm laborer. At some point in the 1920s, he moves to Denver, Colorado.

In March 1930, he files a Declaration of Intention to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. In the 1930 census, he's living in a boarding house on Larimer Street in downtown Denver. He works as an auto body builder with Ford Motor Company. Denver city directories throughout the 1930s indicate he continues to live on Larimer Street.

On September 2, 1939, he marries Veronica Polich. In the 1940 census, James and Veronica are living with her mother in Golden, Colorado. He's employed as a rubber pressman with Gates Rubber Company.

In September 1940, he submits an Alien Registration Form as part of his naturalization application. It appears, though, that he never finalized the naturalization process. The National Archives does not have a certificate of naturalization on file.

James died November 22, 1963 from a heart attack - the same day President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. His funeral was November 25th. Pall bearers included: Joe Bath, Earl Ivarson, David Richards, F.W. Vickers, Archie Watters, and George West. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
