Barbara was the daughter of Barbara (White) and Herman Morf. She had two older sisters, Mary Bertha and Eliza, and a younger brother Ed.
Barbara was born in Switzerland and immigrated to America sometime between 1872 and 1883. Her family spoke German in the home and she learned English and attended school until she completed the eighth grade.
On November 7, 1887 in Merrill, Iowa Barbara was joined in marriage to Erick Oleson, son of Mary (Jansen) and Olen Oleson. Erick worked as a railroad foreman and later as a fireman on the railroad.
Barbara and Erick had two children, Eric Leroy and Leonard. Additionally they also helped to raise their niece Sophie Lauck. They continued to live in Plymouth County, later settling in Merrill.
In 1910 Barbara was employed as a nurse for a private family. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
On September 1, 1913 Barbara married William Keates, son of Thersa and John Keates. They were both not working in the 1915 Iowa State Census but by the 1920 Federal Census William was working as a carpenter and Barbara was employed as a nurse.
Barbara was twice widowed.
