Matt was a sheepherder and a farmer. In 1944 he moved his family to Weiser, Idaho, where he had dairy cows and worked cleaning out boilers of freight trains. He returned to Fremont in 1946, where he again operated a farm and also worked in a uranium mine, and was an inspector of seed potatoes for Wayne, Piute, and Sevier Counties.

He and Thelma raised six children, four boys, and two girls. In 1969, Matt and Thelma moved to Bluffdale, where he found employment with Webb Brothers Dairy.
