He married Lucinda Roberts in Duval County, Florida around 1870. She was the daughter of Alexander P. Roberts and Rosanna McCormick Roberts, and had been born about 1845 in Duval County, Florida. According to the 1870 US Census, she had a four-year-old son at that time, Christopher Columbus Gary, and her last name also was Gary. She and her son were living next door to Lucinda's mother, Rosanna.
According to the 1880 US Census, John and Lucinda had five children by 1880. Four more children would be born in the 1880's.
