Mary Catherine "Kaye" (Loft) Uptmore of Lewiston died Saturday night at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center after a 17 month long battle with colon cancer. She was 56.

She taught school in the Prairie School District in Cottonwood from 1978 until retirement in 1997 because of her illness.

Born Jan. 14, 1942, in Cottonwood to William C. and Gladys L. (McGrath) Loft, she attended school in Cottonwood and graduated from St. Gertrude's Academy in 1959. She attended night school at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston and graduated in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

She married Vern Uptmor on June 2, 1962, and the couple made their first home in Lacey, Wash., while he served in the U.S. Army. They moved back to the Cottonwood area in 1976, settling in Keuterville, and then moved to Lewiston in 1996.

She enjoyed reading, visiting with friends and attending church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David Loft, and a sister, Dorothy Haas.
