Ethel Jane Moyle was the fourth of the five children of Alfred and Emily Jane Moyle. Her older siblings were Clarence, Alvin, and Melva, and her younger sister was Isabell.

We do not know much about Ethel's life. The 1920 census lists her as being a telephone operator in Houghton. On June 1, 1921, she married Edward F. Johnson of Hancock, who was a chauffeur and later a ticket seller for the Kerredge Theater. They had two children together. By 1930, the family resided with her parents. They later moved to Warren Street in Hancock, where they took up residence next door to Erick and Amanda Johnson, Edward's parents. Edward died after a long history of heart problems in 1941.

At the time of her death in 1963, Ethel was survived by her son Ed, Ed's wife Ruth, and their three children, as well as her daughter Ramona Jane, Ramona's husband Ernie, and their two children. Her living relatives also included all of her siblings and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Ethel's parents preceded her in death.
