"CUMMING--PIONEER MECHANIC IS GONE. George CUMMING Passes Away at an Advanced Age. George CUMMING, a well-known pioneer mechanic, passed away last Saturday evening in his seventy-eighth year. He was born in Scotland and came to California in 1850, and was chief engineer of the Pacific Mail steamer Panama in 1853. He was afterwards the mechanical expert for General E. D. BAKER in his mining ventures, and was chief engineer of the Almaden mines. Mr. CUMMING was at one time connected with the Risdon Iron Works, but for the past twenty years was in business for himself. He was well-known as an inventor of many things in the mechanical line -- this steam stamp mill, a hydraulic riveter and an improved portable forge. A widow and six children survive him."
