Abraham Barker was born in 1860 in Lithuania. He emigrated to Trenton, New Jersey, in 1880, where he became a citizen of the United States in 1884. In 1886 he married Flora Jacobs of Chicago, and they moved to Springfield Illinois with their three children in 1894.

The Springfield entrepreneur owned at various times in his life a junk dealership, the Barker Mine Car and Foundry, Barker-Sullivan Cigar Company, and the A. Barker Iron Company. The Barker, Goldman Lubin Company was the sole contractor to destroy the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. In 1908 Barker built a three story brick apartment building called Barker Flats adjacent to his home on North Fifth Street. The building still stands.
