Laurence J. Smith, 76, died suddenly at 9:30 pm Tuesday at hos home, 1138 Chestnut Street. He was seated in a chair reading a book when stricken with a heart attack, and died almost instantly. Born in Franklin May 21, 1895, he was a son of Phillip L. and Jane H. Hooper Smith.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1913, and from Emerson College, Boston, MA, then later studied at Middlebury and Boston Colleges, and at the University of London. He received his master of arts degree from the University of New Hampshire, has a keen interest in dramatics, taking a number of courses in drama, and made professional appearances with stock companies in Jamestown, NY, and Martha's Vineyard, MA. He taught English and speech for 42 years at various boys' preparatory schools, including Williston Academy, Easthampton, MA; Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA, and Worcester Academy, Worcester, MA. When he retired in 1959, he was head of the English department at Worcester Academy. After retirement, he returned to Franklin to reside and entered into many community projects. He was a charter member of Venango Historical Society, and active in St. John's Episcopal Church. He served in World War I with a medical unit in France.

Surviving are a sister, J. Louise Smith, of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Constance, wife of Rev. E. T. Jones, and by a brother, George E. Smith.

Services will be at 1:30 pm Friday at Frank S. Huff Chapel with Rev/ Reginald E. Moore, rector of St. John's Church, officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery.
