Sylvester Eustas/Eastye(Eastes), a fisherman, born 1522, in Deal, Kent. On 10/12/1549 Sylvester, along with John Lamond, appeared before the Consistory Court of Canterbury, charged by the Rector of Deal for allegedly not paying their tithes from their herring catch. Lamond asserted that "in the time of his rememberance .. he paid no tithe", while Sylvester said that in the past two years he and his colleagues had taken two or three "last" (a dozen 6-9 pound barrels) and that "the school of herring hath always comined there away but they had not netteth there to take them well before that time".[9] It has been suggested that the failure to pay the tithe was a political gesture, rather than just oversight, church tithes becoming increasingly unpopular at that time.[6] Sylvester died in 1579 and was buried, 7/6/1579, in the Ringwould hurch cemetery, Kent. Married Jone at Deal in 1545.[1,5] Jone was buried 16/5/1561, at Deal, Kent.
