When we went to get a dog we looked at all of them and were trying to choose which one we wanted. The choice wasn't ours. This tiny, cute little mostly black german shepherd walked up to my husband and sat on his foot. Bear chose us. It was love at first sight for all of us. Bear came to be my heart dog. I love all of my dogs deeply and mourn them when they die, but Bear took such a large part of my heart with him when his time was up. It's been 6 and a half years since he died from cancer and I still cry for him like it just happened.

Bear's mother quit nursing him and he had to be bottle fed for a few weeks. About two weeks after we got him my husband decided to get him a companion to keep him company. We found a two year old German Shepherd named Teddy who had to be surrendered by his owners due to dominance problems with a dog they had for a few years.

Bear followed Teddy everywhere. Teddy was housebroken and Bear went outside to do his business whenever Teddy did. Teddy actually housebroke Bear for us.

Teddy got sick in December of 2005 and had to be put down. Bear was overcome with grief. It broke my heart. In April of 2006 I got a call from my sister about a German Shepherd she and her boyfriend had. The owner of the dog was abusing her, so sister's boyfriend asked if he could have her. The owner agreed because he just didn't like her. My sister and her friend couldn't afford food and maintenance for her, but wanted to get her away from the owner. She called and asked if we could take Penny, the unwanted German Shepherd. I was reluctant, because I didn't know how Bear would act around a dog that wasn't Teddy. As soon as I brought her home Bear perked up. He had a playmate again and seemed happy.

The happiness was short lived. One day he couldn't get up. We took him to the vet and they did x-rays and found a tumor on his liver. They couldn't tell if it had spread or not, so we decided to have surgery to see if we could save him. It had masticized and he lived only a few more weeks.

I love you Bear and think of you every day. I hope you and Teddy are playing together at Rainbow Bridge.
