LeRoy Doloss Izatt died Sept. 5, 1999 from an apparent drowning in a pond near his home.
Roy was born Aug 14, 1919 in Afton. He was the second child born to Ira Deloss Izatt and Annie Elizabeth Anglesey. His older brother Howard died 12 days after birth, from pneumonia. This made Roy the oldest child of the family.
His father Ira was often sick, so Roy had a lot of responsibility from a young age. Roy's first trip out of the valley was on a freight wagon though Crow Creek. They were going to Logan to visit his father, who was being treated by a doctor there. Annie said it was so cold she couldn't unwrap the baby for a diaper change until they got to the HalfWay House, were they spent the night.
Roy's family was poor so he learned to work from an early age. His mother said that he was doing a man's job at age eight. He grew up on a small farm west of Afton. They lived in a small log house with a dirt floor. At night the boys would go outside and climb a ladder into the loft to sleep.
They were hard pressed for the necessities of life and there were times all they had was milk and flour. Even an egg was a luxury. But Roy always seemed to have a smile on his face. He worked hard and no job was too hard or too dirty for him to take.
When Roy was in his early 40s a fruit peddler by the name of Adams, introduced Roy to Edna Jarvis of Pleasant Grove IT. They were married May 26, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Roy and Edna later adopted three children, Tawna beth, Layna Marie and Ira Dan. Tawna died at about six months of age from cyslic fibrosis.
Around 1970 Roy got a job in Logan as a custodian and moved his family there. He would come back to Star valley on weekends and holidays to work on his land and to see that his widowed mother had her wood cut and stacked for the winter.
After his wife died, Roy said he just couldn't make Logan seem like home anymore. so in the fall of 1997 he came home and lived in his parents' old house on Swift Creek Lane. He was still working at any job he could get until about a year ago. It seemed no one wanted to hire a 79-year-old-man.
Roy was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a dedicated temple patron.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ira and Annie; two brothers Howard Doyle and Clifford Harold; one daughter Tawna Beth and wife Edna.
He is survived by daughter Layna Marie Hansen, Smithfield, UT son Ira Dan Izatt, Nevada; brother Ralph A. Izatt, Auburn; sister Wilda May Hatton, American Fork, UT and Verda Louise Shurtleff, Afton, and eight grandchildren.
Interment was beside his wife and daughter in the Spanish Fork UT cemetery.
