Funeral Services Held Saturday For Ira D. Izatt
Funeral services were conducted Saturday March 5, 1966 at 1 p.m. in the Afton Second-Third Ward Chapel for Ira Delos Izatt, 69, a lifelong Star Valley resident and farmer, who died suddenly on Wednesday, March 2, 1966 at the local hospital following a short illness and an apparent heart attack. L.D. Nield, counselor in the Third Ward Bishopric, conducted the services.
Ira was born Oct 25, 1896 at Bedford, Wyo. He was the third child in a family of nine born to William Boyle and Rhoda Ann Turner Izatt.
On July 23, 1917 he and Annie Elizabeth Anglesey were married at Afton. This marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. To this union were born four sons and two daughters, Howard, Doyle, LeRoy Delos, Clifford Harold, Ralph a., Wilda May, and Verda Louise. A granddaughter, Gaye Anderson, has also been raised in the Izatt home since infancy.
Two sons, Harold and Clifford, preceded their father in death.
Ira was always an industrious, hard working man and spent much of his time in the canyons securing the winter's supply of firewood and saw logs for the local sawmills. He spent several years as an employee of the U.S. Forest Service, during which time he assisted with the construction of the first telephone lines on the bridger National Forest.
During the early days of the mail service between the upper and lower valleys Ira had a contract for delivering the mail between Afton and Freedom. Many of the older residents of the valley will recall the splendid shiny black team of horses which he used in the service. He always took great pride in his horses and was considered by many to be one of the finest hands with animals.
During the later years of his life, he and his son, LeRoy, have operated a dairy farm west of Afton.
Ira was a man who believed in absolute honesty in all things and he practiced this virtue in his dealings with his fellow man. He detested charity, but in times of need and for the sake of his family, he accepted what he considered loans. These were always repaid.
He was blessed with a lovely voice and was asked to sing at parties and other social events throughout the valley. Ira was a pleasant happy man who was able to find something humorous in most of the daily happenings. Many will remember his ready smile and his cheery disposition.
Survivors include his widow Annie; two sons, LeRoy of Afton and Ralph of Auburn; two daughters, Mrs Lee (Wilda) Hatton of Eagle Mountain, Calif. and Mrs Bryan (Verda) Leavitt of Afton; fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters; Leslie Izatt, St. George, Utah; Marcella Pokriots, Santa Cruiz, Calif.; Wilford Izatt, Clearfield, Utah; Mrs Ferrin (Grace) Maxwell, Peoa, Utah; and Mrs John (Meletia) Miles of Afton.
Relatives from out of the valley who came to attend the funeral for Ira Izatt Saturday included Mr and Mrs Lee Hatton and son Jerry from Eagle Mt., Calif.; Mr and Mrs Court Bluck and three children of Salt Lake City; Mr and Mrs Wilford Izatt of Clearfield, Utah; Mrs Marcella Pokriots of Santa Cruz, Calif.; Mr and Mrs LaMont Anglesey and Mr and Mrs LaVere Anglesey of Kearns, Utah.
