War Nurse Dies After Long Illness

Mrs Mary Elizabeth Izatt Garvey passed peacefully away at the Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City on Sunday, July 21, 1940, at noon. She has been ill for along time and for several years has been an invalid. She was the daughter of Mrs.Rhoda Izatt and the late William B Izatt, was born at Bedford Wyoming on August 28, 1892. She spent her early girlhood at Bedford and in Afton where she attended district school.
She was set apart for a Lower Valley Stake Secretary in July 1910 by President George Osmond, and was also secretary for some other organizations. She entered the Utah-Idaho Training school at Logan, at the Utah-Idaho Hospital, graduating March 15,1918. In April 1918 she volunteered as a U.S. nurse at Fort Douglas, Utah and remained there until September 1919. On April 15, 1921 she again went into the U.S. Service as a nurse at San Joaquin General Hospital, French Camp. at Camp Kearney, California where she remained until 1922.
On October 16, 1924 she was married to Michael J. Garvey in California. She has one daughter, Gloria who is left to honor the memory of her mother.
Mary had a personality that few people possess and during her many years of sickness she never complained, she was patient and understanding always.
Funeral services were held in the North Ward chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, Bishop Franklin R. Gardner conducted.
The first musical number was a duet by Bonita Gardner and Laura Draney. "The Flag Without a Stain."
Invocation was offered by President Clarence Gardner.
Solo by Phyllis Hepworth, "In That Beautiful Land".

The pall bearers were members of the American Legion. The ladies of the American Legion carried the flowers. Jack Fluckiger and Ray Leavitt were the color bearers of the American Legion flags.
Mary was buried in her Red Cross uniform. She was the first nurse in the Western Division and it is understood that she is the first nurse in the state to receive a full military funeral.
A beautiful flag draped the casket. The stand and pulpit were banked in beautiful flowers.
The grave was dedicated by Carl Cook. Taps was played by Lee Call.
Mrs Garvey leaves to mourn her loss a daughter, Gloria, an aged mother, Mrs Rhoda Izatt, and the following brothers and sisters: Ira, Leslie, Wilford, Marcella, Meletia;
Mrs Mardcella Pokriots of Santa Cruz, California was ill and was unable to attend the funeral.
Those attending the funeral from out of the valley are: Mrs E.J. Clark and daughters Grace and Geneva, and Mrs John Andrews, from Logan, Utah; Mr and Mrs Joseph E. Wilson and Mr and Mrs Clarence Lloyd, from Lund, Idaho; and Mr and Mrs roy Andrews and three daughters, from Trenton Utah.
