HIRAM BEEDLE KILLED ON R.R. CROSSING

A shocking accident occurred at the C. B. & Q. railroad crossing on south Eighth street last evening at 6:10 o'clock, when Mr. Hiram Beedle, aged about eighty years, was struck by the engine of an east bound train and sustained injuries which resulted in his death about an hour later.

Mr. Beedle had been employed during the day with Mr. J. R. Curtis cutting broom corn on some land in the Penick addition, and was returning from his work when the accident occurred. He apparently did not notice the train coming and stepped directly in front of it. The engineer of the train applied the brakes and stopped it at once.

Mr. John H. Curtis was a short distance away and saw the accident and rushed to Mr. Beedle's assistance. He was found in an unconscious condition, suffering with a fractured skull. The injured man was removed to the office of Dr. T. P. Stanton, where he passed away about 7:25. No arrangements for the funeral service have been made as yet, the arrival of relatives from a distance being awaited.

Hiram Beedle was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on December 20, 1842. When quite small he moved with his parents to Winterset, Madison county, Iowa, where he grew to young manhood. He then moved to Ringgold county, where he met Miss Alice Gard, to whom he was married about 1870 in St. Joseph, Mo. To them ten children were born. One son and one daughter died in infancy, and a son, Frank, died at the age of 23 years.

The children surviving are Mrs. Clarence Homsher, of Chariton, with whom he made his home; Mark and Earl Beedle, of Halkirk, Canada; Carl Beedle and Mrs. Ruth Vickroy, of Beverly, Nebraska; Mrs. Floyd Yates, of Wray, Colorado; Mrs. Fred Watsabaugh, of Omaha, Nebraska.

The wife and mother passed away two years ago, on June 1, 1920, at Halkirk, Canada, where she and her husband had gone to spend some time with their sons. Prior to that time the family's home had been in Chariton for many years. After the death of his wife Mr. Beedle came back to Chariton and has since made his home here with his daughter, Mrs. Homsher.

He had been a member of the Christian church for many years, having affiliated with that denomination at Last Chance. He was a quiet, unassuming man, honest and upright, highly regarded by all who knew him, and his tragic death had brought sadness to all who knew him. The sympathy of the entire community will be extended to the sorrowing children.
