Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company H, 75th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on October 1, 1861. His unit, made up mostly of German immigrants from Philadelphia, served during the Spring 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign (where Union forces unsuccessfully battled the rebels under General Stonewall Jackson), the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, and the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. In the last battle the 75th Pennsylvania arrived on the field after Union cavalry had fought Confederate infantry during the morning hours of July 1, and were deployed in the Oak Hill area north of town. They took severe casualties when rebel infantry under Major General Robert Rhodes attacked the position, losing 28 men killed and over 100 wounded. Private Ift was one of those 28 men who sacrificed their lives that day.

On August 24, 1863 his wife, Theresa Ift, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #309000, Certificate #12282).
