Mrs. Bette (nee Young) Troiano, 84, of Linden died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Peggy Cologne's House at Hope Village, Scotch Plains.

Bette was born on Dec. 1, 1923, in Buckhaven, Scotland, the daughter of the late Sarah and Arthur Young, and came to the United States and Linden, where she's resided since 1926.

She graduated from Linden High School in 1941, where she served as a cheerleader and on various school functions.

Bette was employed by the Linden Board of Education as a school secretary for 30 years, ending her career at school No. 10. Previously, she worked at the Linden News as a social reporter.

Bette was a member and past president of School No. 1 PTA, and a member of Daughters of Scotia and the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 1397, Linden. She was also a member and past president of the Women's Golf Division at Roselle Golf Club, a member of the Union County Juvenile Conference Commission, and a member for over 50 years of the Linden Reformed Church, where she served as a deacon and elder.

She was the beloved wife of 63 years of John J. Troiano, a former member of the Linden Police Department and Union County Sheriff's Office; devoted mother of John A. Troiano of Linden; loving sister of Kathleen Hoff of Linden, and dearest grandmother of Christopher Troiano and his wife, Kimberley, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
