His date of birth on the tombstone inscription is approximated for he did not remember his exact birth year; therefore, for purposes of Social Security he chose an approximate date because all birth records had been destroyed in a fire--he only knew where he fit in the series of siblings. However, his World War I draft registration card (to which he did not have access) shows his birth date as 26 September 1884 and his age (on 12 September 1918) as 33 years. The 1884 birth year seems to be corroborated by information recorded in the 1900 census of Lawrence County, Missouri which shows his birth date as September 1884. I also found a Wisconsin birth record showing his date of birth as 26 September 1883.
