Inscription: Private 1st Class in the Quartermaster Corps

Draft registration shows he enlisted June 5, 1917, while the application for his headstone, signed by his wife, shows he enlisted June 24, 1918. He was honorably discharged September 12, 1919. He was stationed at Camp Pike, Arkansas.
Later he was in France for about six months as a member of the 302nd wagon company. He was gassed during the war causing health problems, including frequent nosebleeds, the remainder of his life.
