John fought in the Civil War with Company G, 198th Regt., Pa. Volunteer Infantry, under the command of Capt. Wm. L. Guinther and Col. H. G. Sickel. The regiment was assigned to the First Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac.
