Catherine married Hugh McGroty on July 2, 1865 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Hugh served valiantly during the Civil War in the 3rd Infantry New Hampshire. He fought at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff and was captured and imprisoned at Andersonville, Georgia. Due to his severe injuries and ill health, Hugh passed away in 1868. Catherine became a young widow.
Catherine and Hugh had one child, Margaret, who was born in South Berwick, Maine in 1867. After Hugh's death, Margaret and Catherine went to live with her widowed mother in Boston.
Catherine never remarried and spent the remaining time of her life in the Boston area until her death in 1903.
