James married Elizabeth Stewart in 1871. He worked as a blacksmith apprentice in Boston. James and Elizabeth had but one child, Lizzie, who passed away in infancy at the age of 3 months in July of 1872.
This tragedy would carry on as James, himself, would die a month later at the early age of 21 years of hip disease.
