"Mary (ALEXANDER) OLIPHANT, was born in Bloomington, Sept. 30, 1837. About the year 1839 her father, William Dunn ALEXANDER, removed to Greene County and settled on a farm. In 1848 her father removed with his family to Jasper county, Mo., where she grew to young womanhood. In 1853 she came to Greene county to visit her grandfather William ALEXANDER and family and met Joseph T. OLIPHANT whom she married in July 1854. After her marriage to Mr. Oliphant they resided in Greene county. Her husband gave his services to his country during the Civil war, enlisting as first lieutenant in Co. E. 97th Ind. Inf. Vol. Later he was promoted to chaplain. Thus she was left to care for her young family while her husband was at the front defending his country until wounded at Kennesaw Mountain and was discharged to return to his family. To this union were born the following children: Elizabeth LAWSON, Francis M. DARWIN, Mary, Bertha and Martha D., all of whom are living except two. Her husband died at their present home at Bloomington, May 6, 1911, since which time she had been in poor health, ad departed this life at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 7, 1912. She had been a consistent member of the M.E. church since young womanhood and died in the hope of a blessed immortality."
