Pvt. Lionel Bodsworth enlisted on 19 February 1916. He listed his occupation as Labourer, and married giving his next of kin as his sister Mrs. Ellen Sophia Bodsworth Gibbs of Lilac crescent, Brighton North, Victoria. He amended his next of kin to his wife Mrs. Adelaide Bodsworth (Adelaide Clarice Burns who he had married in 1915. His roll title was 22 Infantry Battalion - 13 to 18 Reinforcements (July-November 1916). He embarked from Melbourne on 3 July 1916 aboard the HMAT Ayrshire A33. Some time in 1916, his wife bore him a son, William Lionel who died as an infant. From "The Argus" Saturday 10 November 1917 Private L. Bodsworth, A.I.F., who worked for a number of years with Ralph Bros., dairyman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bodsworth, of Collingwood street, Sandringham, has been awarded a silver military medal for bravery when fighting in France.
For conspicuous gallantry as a bomber in action near Bullecourt on 3rd May when he bombed towards the 62nd. Division, remaining at work although wounded.
His coolness and prompt action are shown by the fact that he threw a German bomb back before it exploded and later one of our own from which the lever had been removed accidentally.
