HUNTOON, JOEL--Born in Sullivan Co., N. H., Oct. 14, 1823; son of Lemuel and Sibyl (Palmer) Huntoon; received an academic education; married Ellen S. Richardson, Alstead, N. H., May 22, 1845; to Leavenworth, Kan. summer of 1856; to Topeka, Oct. 1856; preempted, Nov. 1856, tract of land from Huntoon St. to about 14th, in width and 1/2 mile in length; built a pile bridge across the Kaw, from Kansas Ave. 1857-58; city engineer, 1858-1861; capt. 11th Kan. vols. Co. H. 1862; made col. by brevet; served throughout the war; receiver of U.S land office, Topeka, 1865-69; was chief engineer, Kansas Midland, and built road from here to K.C.; chief engineer, Santa Fe R. R., and built road from here to Burlingame; dir. Sept. 17, 1860-Nov. 24, 1863; built 100 miles Scioto Valley R. R. Ohio, which was completed 1879; Joel Huntoon & Son, dry goods dealers, Topeka 3 years; civil engineer up to recent years.
