Author. born Frances Moore, later taking the surname Brooke from her clergyman husband. Her first foray into writing was the periodical 'Old Maid'. Her novels were 'Lady Julia Mandeville' (praised by Voltaire), 'Emily Montgue' and 'The Excursion'. She also wrote, for the stage, 'Rosina' and 'The Siege of Sinope'. Although she is little read today, her work was extremely well-received in her day and she was an important precursor to Fanny Burney, Ann Radcliffe and Jane Austen. She died two days after her husband, and her memorial reads 'The union of superior literary talents with goodness of heart, rendered her works serviceable to the cause of those virtues of which her life was shining example'.
