Leg Cut Off by Train,
Man Dies in Hospital

John Engler, 48, of Jackson Lodge, died in St. Joseph's Hospital at 11:25 o'clock last night, five hours after he suffered the loss of his right leg in a fall beneath the wheels of a New York Central passenger train leaving the Syracuse station.

Engler's leg was cut off just above the knee. He also suffered severe loss of blood, shock, and a scalp laceration.... [rest of article is illegible]

Funeral services for John Engler, 48, who died in St. Joseph's Hospital Saturday night a few hours after the wheels of a slowly moving train passed over his right leg at the New York Central trainshed, will be conducted at 8:30 A. M. Tuesday in the John B. Murphy funeral home, and at 9 o'clock in Assumption Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Mr. Engler is survived by two sons, John and Donald Engler; a daughter, Miss Marilyn Engler; four half-brothers, Charles, Henry, Fred and John Schafran, and four half-sisters, Mrs. Anna Berger, Mrs. Fred Brewer, Mrs. Frank Eichenlaub and Mrs. Earl DeForest.

Six brothers were bearers Tuesday [May 6, 1941] at the funeral of John Engler, who died Saturday [May 3, 1941]. Services were conducted at 8:30 A.M. in the John B. Murphy funeral home, and a high mass of requiem was celebrated at 9 o'clock in Assumption Church by the Rev. Xavier Sheridan. Burial was in Assumption Cemetery, with the following acting as bearers: Arthur, Henry, David, Floyd, James, and Clyde [Cousineau?].
