BILLIE JAMES HALLEY

Billie James Halley, 36, former Tularean and one of the valley's leaders in agricultural aviation, died yesterday in a Corcoran hospital of injuries received in a truck-car crash near there Thursday.

He was a son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Whiteside, Palm Springs, former publishers of The Advance-Register.

For the past 10 years Halley had been manager and co-owner of the Corcoran airport and Lakeland Dusters.

For several years prior he resided in Tulare while associated with Rankin Aviation Industries. During World War II he held the rank of lieutenant in the army air corps and served as flight instructor at Williams field, near Phoenix, Ariz. During his following aviation career he became one of the highest rated pilots in the state with a total of more than 12,000 hours of flying time in all types of aircraft. In addition to his commercial and flight instructor ratings he held licenses for multi-engine land and sea, instrument and agricultural pest control.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Betty Lou Whiteside Halley: and three children, Richard Halley, Cathey Halley and Lori Ann Halley, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Halley, Sr„ Visalia; two sisters, Mrs. George Campbell, Visalia and Mrs. Rolla W. Rider, Jr., Pasadena, and a brother, Col. O. T. Halley, Jr., of the USAF's strategic command, who is: now in England, but who is enroute by jet plane to attend the funeral.

Funeral will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Corcoran Methodist Church.

The Corcoran Masonic lodge, of which he was a member, will conduct the services and will have charge of graveside rites in Tulare cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Goble chapel is making arrangements.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers remembrances be made to the Bill Halley Memorial fund in care of Mrs. William Dittes or Mrs. Verdo Gregory, members of the 50-50 club auxiliary of the Corcoran district hospital. The fund will be used to purchase additional equipment for the hospital.
