TEGA CAY - Retired Air Force Col. Oscar T. "Tom" Halley Jr., 87, of Hunters Run Drive died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at home.
Burial with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
A native of Brownsfield, Texas, Col. Halley was the son of the late Florence and Oscar Halley.
He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940 and received his commission as second lieutenant in 1941. During World War II, he was commanding officer of two pilot training schools and later was assigned to operations in the Philippines and Tokyo. He was director for the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) Project for the Air Defense Command, for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit. He later was director of operations, 406th Fighter Wing and director of operations, Headquarters 3rd Air Force, both in England. He also represented the Commander 3rd Air Force on the British Under-Secretary-of-State Air Traffic Control Policy Board.
After retiring from the Air Force, he joined MITRE Corp. in Bedford, Mass., where he was division head and technical director of the Tactical Systems Division and developed new defense capabilities. He also served as director of the Seattle Site of MITRE and was responsible for testing and evaluating Air Force E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System under contract to the Boeing Co.
He later formed a development company in New London, N.H., operating a privately owned inn, tennis and beach facility.
He was the widower of Jean Minter Halley.
Surviving are his son, John Halley of Pompano Beach, Fla.; his daughter, Sandra Mass of Tega Cay; two sisters, Margaret Campbell and Jane Rider-Stevenson; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
