Polly's original headstone, which, according to granddaughter, Clara (Baldinelli) Smreker (1923-1996), was made by Polly and John's eldest son, Hobert, only included her years of birth and death (1872-1934); I first saw this headstone in June 1995 at which time I also learned her given name had been Mary. Her month of birth comes from the 1900 Anderson County, Tennessee, Census, and the date of death comes from her death record (the cause was attributed to "chronic endocarditis following influenza"). When Clara Smreker's sister, Mary "Sweetie" (Baldinelli) McCleary, purchased the new headstone for their grandmother's grave during the summer of 1999, the incorrect year of death was retained (the middle initial of S. is superfluous). Before Polly's marriage to John Shoopman, she had one son, Andrew Jackson "Andy" Patterson (1893-1950), who's buried in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, West Virginia. Polly and Andy's father, the Rev. Robert B. (or "Tim") Patterson, never married, and Andy was raised by his father. According to his headstone in the old Petros Cemetery in Petros, Tennessee, Andy's father was born on January 17, 1862, and died on September 9, 1910. His death record, which attributes the cause to "rheumatism," indicates that he was born and died in Petros. Polly, however, married John Shoopman in September 1897 in Anderson County, Tennessee (the marriage book only includes the license date of September 13, 1897), and their children were as follows: 1) Hobert Shoopman (1897-1979), Rock Springs Cemetery, Rock Springs, Wyoming; 2) James Corbett Shoopman (1898-1965), International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Bedford, Kentucky; 3) Elsie (Shoopman) Stanley/Baldinelli (1900-1973), Oakland Cemetery, Clarksville, Arkansas; 4) Lee Ella (Shoopman) Clingan/Fox (1902-1965), Sandia Memory Gardens, Albuquerque, New Mexico; 5) Lela (Shoopman) Frazier (1904-1944), Rock Springs Cemetery, Rock Springs, Wyoming; 6) Martha (Shoopman) Odom/Elein, died in the 1950s (was cremated); and 7) Dola (Shoopman) Croy/Miles,* died in the 1950s (was cremated). According to the 1910 Anderson County, Tennessee, Census, Polly lost a child in infancy (unless her response was an indirect reference to her firstborn, Andy).

(*Dola's 1st husband was Muriel H. Croy [Memorial 240633807].)
