On Monday, September 22, 1947, at 11:02 p. m., Elizabeth Shuman Betts passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Myrl Carr, where she had made her home for the past several years. Although in failing health for some time, her death was unexpected. She suffered a heart attack and lived only a few hours.
She was the youngest child of Margaret [Siegfried] and Jacob Shuman and was born July 6, 1849, near Calais, Monroe County, Ohio. She lived a long and useful life, being 98 years, 2 months and 16 days at the time of her death.
On November 7, 1867 she united in marriage with Robert Dailey and on November 28, 1869 was left a widow with two small children, Oliver who died in infancy, and [Mrs.] Mary E. Hunt of Eldon, Ohio.
On July 12, 1872, she again united in marriage with James W. Betts, moving to Batesville, Ohio where she spent most of her life. To this union were born seven children and on December 14, 1915, death again entered her home taking the husband and father. In November, 1918 a son, Roy Gilbert, was taken and in November, 1922 a daughter, Atha May Douglass.
She was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, two of each preceding her in death. Surviving are Mary E. Hunt of Eldon, Ohio, A. J. Betts of Quaker City, Ohio, Emma Long of Batesville, Ohio, Blanche Gallagher of near Batesville and Eva Carr of Cumberland, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
She was a kind and loving mother and true friend, devoting her time to her family and helping others as long as health permitted. During the last months she suffered much, but never complained, always saying she was ready and wanted to go home. She was always glad when friends came to visit her and will be sadly missed by those who loved her.
Early in life she united with the C. P. Church in Batesville, transferring her membership to the Methodist church of that place when the C. P. church disbanded. On Wednesday her body was taken from the Carr home to the home of the daughter, Mrs. Emma Long in Batesville by the Tom Funeral Service. Services were conducted from the Methodist church, Thursday at 2:00 p. m. by Rev. Wilson, minister, and burial was made in Wesley Chapel Cemetery by the side of her husband.
