James served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in H Company, 14th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry. He later made the rank of Corporal. He fought in the battle of Port Royal Ferry, South Carolina. According to the Regiment casualties list James was killed on January 1, 1862. He is reportly buried on the banks of the Potomac River. Some claimed he died on September 20, 1862, but can't find the proof.
