Fosston - Dolores Bakken, 65, died Sunday, March 12, 2000 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 16 at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Steven Weston in charge of the arrangements. Interment was in Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Fosston with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Dolores Ardell Kroening was born on February 28, 1935 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Alfred and Virgie Kroening. She studied piano and violin at the McPhail School of Music. In 1949, she moved with her family to Sletten township, rural Fosston. She graduated from Fosston High School in 1953.

On May 30, 1953, Dolores was united in marriage to LeVerne Bakken in Fosston. The couple resided in Rosebud township, rural Fosston. LeVerne died on October 30, 1991.

Dolores was a waitress at various area restaurants and also worked at the Fosston Dairy Queen. She drove bus for Fosston School Dist. 601 for many years, was a peace officer in Fosston, Winger and Erskine and worked for the Fosston Ambulance Service. She studied practical nursing at the Area Vocational Technical Institute in Thief River Falls while working as a nursing assistant at area nursing homes. Dolores worked as a security guard at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen until she retired in 1999.

She enjoyed fishing, bowling, sewing, gardening, flowers and dancing.

Dolores is survived by her mother, Virgie Kroening of Lengby; one son, Robert (Jean) Bakken of Sioux City, IA; five daughters, Lizann Bentley of Woodbury, Jo (Randy) Gast of Beltrami; Terrie (Brent) Halvorson of Thompson, ND, Melissa (Loren) Holub of Scottsbluff, NE, and Shelli Bakken (Jim DuVal) of Circle Pines; 15 grandchildren; three sisters, Juanita (Robert Sr.) Balstad of Fosston, Patricia (Daryl) Norberg of Thief River Falls and Diane Dombrowski of Rosemount; one brother, Douglas (Joyce) Kroening of Andover; one sister-in-law and many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, father and one brother, Roger Kroening.
