Author. Born William Edward Campbell, he served in the United States Marine Corps during World War I as a Sergeant in the 5th Marine Regiment and saw extensive combat in France in 1918. His performance in battle would see him receive the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, and from France, the Croix de Guerre. After the war, he studied law at the University of Alabama, started writing under the pen name of "William March", and published numerous short stories and novels. His best-known works were "Company K", which was based on his Marine Corps experience in World War I, and "The Bad Seed" which was published just before his death in 1954. That novel became a best seller and was later adapted as a Broadway play and as a motion picture.
