In 1860, he was a laborer - military records say shoemaker - living with and/or working for the Jacob Markley family in Maytown, East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster County September 2, 1861, and mustered into federal service either that day or the following October (both reported) as a musician with Co. B, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Blaines Crossroads, Tennessee. promoted to the regimental staff at the rank of principle musician March 1, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company July 17, 1865.

In 1870, he was a resident of Hancock County, West Virginia. He married Minnie LNU. but no children were found. By 1880, he was living with his wife in Franklin Township, Cambria County, and in 1900, in Pittsburgh with his then wife Wilhelmina LNU. Along the way he worked as a music teacher, piano tuner, and mail carrier. He died in Beaver County when he was "accidentally struck and killed at Ambridge Station by a train."
