He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Brown of Burlington, Iowa, at that place June 18, 1843. To this union ten children were born. Seven of whom survive him, viz.-Mrs. Mary DeHart of Chualar, Cal., Mrs. Emeline Connor, of Des Moines, Ia.; Oliver of Van Buren county, Iowa; Mrs. Cornelia Wilson, of Bonaparte, Iowa; Mrs. Harriet Doughty, of Van Buren County, Ella Forbes, of Milton, Iowa; and Melvin, who resides at the old homestead. Two children died in infancy, and a daughter Mrs. Laura Smith died Dec. 5, 1895.
There are 12 grand children and 5 great grand children living. All of his children except Mrs. DeHart were present at the funeral.
Mr. Sargeant came to Van Buren county Sept. 20, 1839.
