U.S. Congressman. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1830 and proceeded to practice law in Newark, Ohio. He served as prosecuting attorney of Newark, (1832 to 1836) and as Mayor of Newark, in 1834. In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving until 1843. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law. While attending a temperance convention, as a grand worthy patriarch of the Sons of Temperance, Ohio, he contracted cholera and died.
