OBITUARY :
ALEX HORWATH, 79, of 34 Barnett Ave., Waynesboro, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 1996, in his home. He had been in failing health for the past 2 1/2 years and critically ill for the past week.

Born Aug. 23, 1916, in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late Wendell and Catherine (Biro) Horwath. He had lived his early life in Bethlehem.

Mr. Horwath attended the schools in Bethlehem.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He served in the Pacific Theater, serving in Guadalcanal, Okinawa as a staff sergeant.

He and his wife of 43 years, Mrs. Anna V. (Besecker) Horwath, were married Aug. 9, 1952. They moved to the present residence in 1952.

Mr. Horwath served with the CCC camps in Benton from 1934 to 1935 and then Old Forge Camp from 1936 to 1938.

Prior to the military, he was employed at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro. Following his discharge, he returned to Landis Tool. He then was a storekeeper of parts for Fairchild RePublic Co., Hagerstown, for 32 years. He retired on Feb. 28, 1981.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro.

Mr. Horwath was a member of UAW Union Local 842, Hagerstown, and the Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Jean E. (Horwath) Mickley of Mont Alto; one son, Dennis E. Besecker of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Gardner of Bethlehem; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro, with Pastor Jay A. Saxe and Pastor Roger E. Keech officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the funeral home.

There will be no public viewing.
