Jerome Derenzo of Needham and Aventura, Fla., died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham. He was 85.
Born in Newton, he was a lifelong resident of Needham. He was a World War II Navy Seabee veteran.
Mr. Derenzo was president of the J. Derenzo Co. of Needham, which he founded in 1949, and from which he retired in 2001. He was a philanthropist and supported many organizations in the Needham area.
He was founder of the 100 Club of Massachusetts Inc., Needham Chapter, a member of Massachusetts Society of Explosive Engineers, and a former member of the Rotary Club of Needham.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Evelyn M. (Tomani) Derenzo; his children, Joseph Derenzo of Colony, Texas, Jerome T. Derenzo III of Fort Myers, Fla., Paula Jayne Zurcher and her husband, Dr. Robert P., of Columbia, S.C., Jay J. Derenzo and his wife, Elizabeth A., of North Walpole; siblings, Helen Scalzi of Norfolk, Lillian Youdis of Needham and Russell Derenzo of Needham; grandchildren, Dawna Derenzo of Needham, Jerome Derenzo IV of Saddle Ridge, N.J., Jonathan R., Ryan P., Taylor S. and Danielle A. Zurcher, all of Columbia, Daniella L. Derenzo of Needham, and Michael J., Nicholas J., and Paige E. Derenzo all of North Walpole; and several nieces and nephews.
He was father of the late Dawna A. Derenzo, and brother of the late Margaret Malagutti.
His funeral was held Monday, Nov. 21, from the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home of Needham, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church in Needham.
Entombment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Needham.
