Anton Houzvicka was born in Sadska, Bohemia, June 13, 1857 and passed away at his home in Verdigre, December 9, 1928 at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 17 days.

At the age of 19, he accompanied his parents and family to America. They came by way of Chicago and Yankton to Niobrara, where the father filed on a homestead 3 and 1/2 miles north of Verdigre in 1876.

He lived at the parental home until 1878, when he came of age and filed on a homestead 4 and 1/2 miles north of Verdigre. Here he lived for a number of years alone. Until September, 1884, when he married Mary Skalisky. To this union three children were born--Charles of Verdigre, Mary (Mrs. Lou L. Powers) of Lincoln and Frank, who passed away at an early age.

In 1891 his wife died. In 1893 he was married to Josephine Donat. This union was blessed with four children, Emanuel (deceased) Josephine (Mrs. Richard Uhlir), Niobrara, Joseph and James (deceased). Charles, the eldest son lived with his father.

Deceased lived on the same farm for 42 years, until 1921, when he moved to Verdigre, where he has since lived.

His second wife passed away, November 28, 1926.

Six years ago he became afflicted with kidney trouble, which had sapped at his vitality through the intervening years.

Mr. Houzvicka was one of the sturdy pioneers, who came here in an early day. He suffered all the trials and hardships of pioneer life--the blizzards, the drouths, the grasshoppers and all those other things, which made the faint hearted ones give up and trek back to a more settled country.

He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, the ZCBJ Lodge and served on the school board of his township, Sparta, for twelve years.

He was a faithful and loving husband, a kind affectionate father and a true hearted neighbor and friend. In his death, the community loses one of its most honorable and upright citizens.

He is survived by one son and two daughters mentioned above, also by three brothers and three sisters; John of Verdigre, James of Exeter, Nebraska, John of Montana, Mrs. Wm Grill of Sherburne, Minn. Mrs. T.A. Takalsky of Verdigre and Mrs. William Fosterman of Verdigre.

Funeral services were held from the ZCBJ Hall, Wednesday afternoon, under the auspices of that order and were attended by a vast concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. W.J. Svoboda spoke in English and Joseph Broz in Bohemian. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. Interment was made in the ZCBJ cemetery north of town.

The Citizen joins with the entire community in mourning the passing of one of its pioneer settlers and in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.
