Laura's mother was charged with killing Laura, her younger brother Norris, and her father Willis by poisoning them with arsenic. Three of her older brothers became ill, but survived.

At first, Laura's mother was convicted and sentenced to the electric chair; a new trial was then granted on the grounds that an alleged confession had been obtained by trickery and other improper means, and she eventually received a sentence of 20 years to life in prison. She was released after 20 years, and died in 1946.
