Levi Sevils was born free in Norfolk County, Virginia where he became a farmer. He enlisted at age 28 on Dec 10, 1863 at Craney Island, Va for 3 years as a Private. He mustered into Company H, 10th US Colored Infantry on Dec 17, 1863 at Fort Monroe, Va. He was listed as absent from his unit "at General Hospital, Fort Monroe" from Mar 15, 1864 to Apr 1865. Per one muster roll remark, he may have been attached to the ambulance corps during that period. He was promoted Corporal on Oct 17, 1865 per Special Order #53, HQ 10th USCT, and was mustered out of service on May 17, 1866 at Galveston, TX.
