Harry Barnard was born in 1879, to parents - Thomas Barnard and Elizabeth Whitebread. The birth was registered in the Godstone district of Surrey.

Harry grew up living on Needles Bank in Godstone.

In 1881, 2 year old Harry and his family are listed as living near the Hare and Hounds. Harry's father is a 'Timber Merchant'.

Sadly, Harry experiences a lot of loss during his childhood, with his sister, Florence, dying when Harry was 3 years old, his father dying 2 years later, and siblings, John and Rose, both dying in 1894.

The 1901 census lists Harry and his remaining family living at 3 Hope Cottages, Needles Bank, Godstone. 21 year old Harry is a Stone Quarry Labourer and his brother's, Thomas and Leonard, are Domestic Gardeners. His mother doesn't have an occupation listed.

In 1907, Harry married Minnie Shady Moore. The marriage took place in the Godstone District.

The couple are living in The Enterdent, Godstone in 1911. They have had no children.

Harry served as a Private in the 12 Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment. His regimental number was 33471. His military records state his home address is 'The Homestead' New Chapel, Lingfield, Surrey.

Harry was killed in action on the 10th April 1917 and is buried at Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Dikkebus, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.
