Moses was the youngest son of Revolutionary War soldier James Byers and his second wife, Elizabeth Watson. While Moses' older siblings were all born in Pennsylvania, he was the first to be born in Ohio after the family relocated there.

He grew up in Ohio and married Mary Ann Brandenburg there on 30 Dec 1828.

They had six children, of which five lived to adulthood:
1. William Newton Byers, born 22 Feb 1831
2. Ann Eliza Byers, born 07 Jan 1833
3. Olivia-Martin Byers, born 26 Jan 1835
4. Rachel Jane Byers, born 07 Dec 1838
5. James Henry Byers, born 27 Sep 1844

Note: Moses named his first daughter Ann Eliza Byers after his recently deceased 21 year old sister of the same name.
