Born about 1751, the son of Irish-born Andrew Byers and his wife Martha. He was born on a farm in Pennsylvania, probably in what is now Fayette County - though at that time it would have been Cumberland County (created 1750), which became Bedford County in 1771, then Westmoreland in 1773, until Fayette County was created in 1783.

In the Revolutionary War James served as a ranger on the frontier under Captain Thomas Stockley, defending the settlers from British troops and British-sponsored Indian attacks. He served for Pennsylvania, as did his father Andrew, two brothers and several cousins.

He was married twice in Fayette County: his first wife died young and he married his second wife, Elizabeth Watson in 1798. James had eleven children in total: a son and three daughters by his first wife, and two sons and five daughters by Elizabeth Watson.

He moved to Ross County, Ohio around 1805 and remained in Ohio about 9 years. Around 1815 he returned to Pennsylvania to live on land he had purchased in Fayette County, near family. After problems finalising his claim to the land he moved to Fairfield township, Madison county, Ohio in 1820.

He wrote his will on 12 Jan 1828 "being well stricken in years, but of perfect mind and memory..." and died later that year. Probate was granted on his will on Wednesday 17 Sep 1828 (in the third day of the session of the Court of Common Pleas which started on 15 Sep 1828).
