Funeral services for John Speich, 67, were held in the Westel Baptist Church Sunday, April 30 at 2 p.m.. Burial was in the Rockwood cemetery.
Mr Speich passed away at the family home in Westel Thursday, April 27 after a few days of critical illness and several years of failing health.
Mr Speich was born in Engi, Switzerland March 24, 1883. John and his mother and father, his brother Heinrich and 2 sisters came to the United States, settling first near Wartburg, Morgan County. On September 6, 1906 he was married to Sarah Brookhart, daughter of Mr and Mrs C E Brookhart of Peavine. Soon after, they moved to Dorton to make their home. They lived there until about 20 years ago when he was transferred to Westel for his work with the Tennessee Central Railroad, by whom he was employed until his retirement 2 years ago. His mother passed away more than 40 years ago.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Eva, at home; 5 other daughters, Mrs Max (Gladys) Davis and Mrs Olin (Mabel) Davis, Limestone; Mrs Clifford (Evelyn)Keylon and Mrs Charles (Mary) Stiles, Chattanooga; Mrs James (Pauline) Howard, Rockwood; 4 sons, Roy and Earl, Milwaukee, Wisc; Ronald, Westel; Henry, Dorton; 18 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Henry Speich, Crab Orchard; 2 sisters, Mrs Annie Rich, Norfolk, Va; Mrs Hale Rich, Emporia, Va.
